Employment / Job Skills Training: Juma's youth participants receive part-time jobs in our concession businesses at ATT and Candlestick Parks in San Francisco, Oracle Arena and Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, Cal Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, and Qualcomm Stadium and PETCO Park in San Diego.

Each youth starts in one of three jobs - as a vendor, scooper, or barista, selling coffee or ice-cream - and participates in a job skills training program, beginning with work readiness training and progressing to more advanced training as appropriate.

Once youth have demonstrated responsibility and a willingness to learn, they are given the opportunity to be promoted into supervisory roles, as peer leaders, cart supervisors, and operations coordinators. After an initial training period, youth earn can earn pay raises with promotions into positions of additional responsibility. Today, Juma's businesses are virtually run by youth who have progressed into supervisor and assistant manager roles providing day-to-day business management.

Financial Planning: Juma offers Individual Development Accounts (IDA) for youth, which provide an opportunity for youth to open a savings account and save money from paychecks for college and other expenses. To date, Juma's youth participants have opened more than 653 Individual Development Accounts (IDA). As of December 31, 2009, Juma's youth have saved more than $783,963 of their earnings toward future plans, and have earned more than $959,990 in matching funds to be used for asset purchases such as college expenses, micro-enterprise and buying a house.

College Preparation & Advancement: Juma exposes youth to college options, and helps youth prepare for college through workshops, field trips to college campuses, career tours with local companies, SAT preparation, and assistance with college and financial aid applications. Juma helps youth develop their own personal vision for the future, assists them in developing educational goals, and then supports them in taking whatever next steps are appropriate.

Life Skills: Working within a social justice framework, Juma offers a variety of life skills programming including workshops, action projects, and retreats in which Juma youth engage in reflection, dialogue and action. Juma Youth Development staff provide youth with one-on-one supportive counseling and skill building around youth-identified life skills including communication, accessing support systems, goal-setting, health, leadership, motivation, personal responsibility, relationships, self-confidence, self-control, stress management, study skills, and time management..
