Juma Ventures’ innovative program has received significant media attention since our inception. In general, the theme of this coverage has been to highlight the uniqueness and effectiveness of Juma’s integrated model of jobs and program services for youth, and to present Juma’s approach as an example for other nonprofit organizations to learn from as they consider and develop their own social enterprises and youth programming.

Juma authors Social Enterprise 2.0

In the Summer 2006 issue of the Stanford Social Innovation Review, Juma's Executive Director authored an article entitled Social Enterprise 2.0 PDF (PDF, 166 KB) that outlined Juma's vision for the future of this field and our work within it.


Should Nonprofits Seek Profits?

In a Harvard Business Review article entitled ‘Should Nonprofits Seek Profits’, Juma was highlighted as one of two nonprofit organizations in the US who are successfully operating businesses as a vehicle for their nonprofit mission. Order the Harvard Business Review article.

Juma featured on Morning Edition

In an NPR story that ran on Morning Edition in February 2004, Juma Ventures was highlighted as a leading social enterprise and Executive Director Jim Schorr commented on the role of business ventures in supporting a nonprofit mission. Listen to the NPR story.

Juma leading the way in Social Enterprise

In a Chronicle Of Philanthropy article entitled “Building the Charity Franchise”, Juma was noted as the first nonprofit organization in the U.S. to operate a business franchise, the leader in a growing entrepreneurial trend in the nonprofit sector. Read the Chronicle article PDF(PDF, 452 KB).


Juma Focuses on Solutions

In an ABC 7 News "Focus on Solutions" segment that aired in July, 2004, Juma Ventures was featured in a major news segment as a nonprofit organization that is making a significant impact in the lives of youth San Francisco’s low-income communities. Several Juma youth and staff were featured in this piece.
